I’m going to come clean. I liked this band so much when I saw them live that I went to see them again about 13 hours
later. Technically the gigs were on different days –one at about midday and then the following one at half past one the following morning, but as I didn’t sleep in between it was like they were on the same day. I was at the End of The Road festival. They captivated me playing on the main stage albeit at midday on the last day. I was completely blown away by their second set in the smaller tepee tent. It even kept me away from the Somerset cider bus and all its many and varied delights. The last time I got this excited about an album was the first time I heard Revival by Gillian Welch. I almost feel like I can’t possibly type fast enough or get across just how good this band is. When I started writing reviews again I doubted that anything would score five out of five. I’m not that generous normally. I wondered what it would take for top marks and I am delighted to have found my answer. A benchmark has been set. This review is just writing itself. I could include nothing in it but about four to five hundred superlatives and not even get close to fully expressing just how good it is or really describing it. Let’s just say that there is a certain New Orleans swagger and swing to it. You can literally smell the melting pot of musical influences
synonymous with one of the world’s most culturally important places that can lay claim to the title of being a “Music City”.
This album is perfect. There is absolutely nothing about it that could conceivably be any better. There is no way that this album is not going to be my favourite of the year. Three months
left of 2012 and it is a done deal. No contest. The clear winner by a considerable distance.
The album sounds exactly as you would expect it to from such an incredible live act. Catch them live soon because I would bet any money that the next time they tour they will be playing
in much, much bigger venues. Those of us lucky enough to live in Brighton and in the midst of a thriving Americana music scene will be at the Green Door Store on 11thof September thanks to the wonderful folks at Brighthelmstone Promotions . If you are within an hour or two of our
city by the sea get there. If you have plans cancel them. Tell all your friends. They will thank you for
it.
Great album, great name. Don’t just buy a copy, buy two and give one away to someone you care about. Hurray for the Riff Raff indeed. I’d be proud to be counted amongst the riff raff for sure.
