Anthony Toner - Miles & Weather

2015 - Dozens of Cousins
This is Anthony Toner's sixth studio recording and whilst I can't speak about its predecessors this new album has a high quality easy going sound, warm expressive vocals and tempo's ranging from slow and moody to a speedy mid tempo. There is plenty of twang on this disc that I'm loathe to try to fit into any particular style but there is often a classy country rock feel.
Despite the sound and instrumentation having a rootsy American feel Anthony is Irish as evidenced by many of his beautifully written lyrics. The songs are thematically varied but there are tales of love found and lost and reflections on life, whilst on the slower tempos there is a lovely warm feel irrespective of subject matter, with every song on the album enveloped in gorgeous, memorable melodies.
The instrumentation is string based with some gorgeous melodic guitar sounds and is always beautifully arranged to allow the vocal and lyrical content plenty of space to shine, and shine they certainly do with Anthony Toner's vocal range within these excellent songs being just about as good as anyone could be. Why I hadn't heard of him before I don't know, but I suspect much will be heard from this hugely talented singer/songwriter in the near future if this album sells as well as it should do.
