2016 News Page
31st January 2016 - Final album review of the year is of yet another cracker! This one is the Goat Roper Rodeo Band's tremendous new recording 'Cosmic Country Blue' an album that is in my Albums of 2016 list.
27th December 2016 - A new review of Wicklow Attwater's incredible debut full length recording 'The Fallen Flame String Band LP' is almost certainly the second to last review of 2016 that I'll be posting. The album follows on from 2 e.ps and is an absolute must for lovers of raw acoustic string band music and is yet another addition to my supposedly diminishing but actually increasing best of 2016 list!
23rd December 2016 - I've been living with J Shogren Shanghai'd's new album 'Why so blue, bird' for some considerable time now and really should have completed the review weeks ago. The fact that I was struggling is down to the incredible quality of this challenging but immensely rewarding collection of songs. There seem to be new revelations with each play but rather than waiting until the disc is an antique I've finally uploaded a review of this tremendous album!
20th December 2016 - I've uploaded a review of 'Trust and Bones' the new album by Mascot Theory. It is the third tremendous recording by one of the best alt. country bands to have appeared so far this century. Ask Santa to leave a copy in your stocking, or you could get a download!
16th December 2016 - In a year that started off with great albums the quality is continuing right to the end, with the latest great album to be reviewed 'Fall away blues' by Red Tail Ring. It is another that is going to be vying for the upper echelons of many peoples best of 2016 lists and is also another that has been subjected to an over long review. Ho hum!
12th December 2016 - It's been part of my life for a while but I've finally uploaded a review of the tremendous 'Join Forces,' the new album by Southern Tenant Folk Union. It's incredible how the band lineup has changed and the music has developed over the years but to say they're still going strong is an understatement. Put all of the various members together and they would be pretty unwieldy, just like this review!
9th December 2016 - I've only just realised that this is the third review in a week of albums by women. It wasn't planned that way (none of what I do can actually be dignified by the word 'planned!') but they are all great albums and none better than Martha Fields tremendous new recording 'Southern White Lies.' 'Real country music' is an accurate 3 word description! I'll try to include some men in my next review.
6th December 2016 - Second review of the month is of another album by a hugely talented lady whose musical roots are in country music but is actually no respecter of boundaries. Anna Elizabeth Laube's new album is called 'Tree' and includes nine gorgeous songs, seven of which she wrote herself.
3rd December 2016 - First c.d review of December the month is of another recording that will doubtless be in many people's albums of the year list. This one is called 'It ain't what it seems' and is by the hugely talented banjo and vocalist Eliza Mary Doyle. Al I can say by way of introduction is, I love it!
29th November 2016 - Final album review of the month is of an absolute stunner! It's a beautiful recording by Courtney Marie Andrews and is called 'Honest life.' I'm not the first to compare her to Joni Mitchell and certainly won't be the last but Courtney is more country and has very much her own unique style.
28th November 2016 - I often get emails and p.ms from artists, p.r people, agents, record companies etc asking if I am reviewing their album and if so, when?! I have a lot of (getting on for 30!) reviews that are at various stages of completion ranging from barely having listened to the album to the review being complete. I thought it might be an idea to publish a basic list of albums that qualify for any of the above stages, so here goes. I'm only going to mention the name of the artist and keep in mind that the publication of the reviews will go well into the New Year as I can only upload two or occasionally three a week:
Adrian & Meredith, Anna Elizabeth Laube, Bap Kennedy, Caleb Klauder & Reeb Willms, Chuck Westmoreland, Courtney Marie Andrews, David Simard, Eliza Mary Doyle, Furnace Mountain, Goat Roper Rodeo band, Harmed Brothers, Hat Fitz & Cara, J Shogren Shanghai'd, Jack Grelle, June Star, Justin Wells, Martha Fields, Mascot Theory, Pappy Fisher & his Old Time Entertainers, Red Sammy & Some Charming Trespassers, Red Tail Ring, Southern Tenant Folk Union, Stevie Ray Latham, Travis Linville, Trevor Alguire, Way Down Wanderers, Wicklow Atwater, Zach Schmidt.
As new albums arrive they may well get slotted in somewhere and some may take priority over what is left of the above but I'm hoping all that are mentioned will get reviewed. That's about it; now let's see how it goes!
25th November 2016 - It's rare that I receive a new 'western swing ' album so when I do I try to give it a play. Most modern 'swing' bands are much smaller than the legendary Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys but in the Western Flyers there are only three people! To say they succeed in emulating much bigger bands on their new album 'Wild Blue Yonder' is an understatement. Great album by a hugely talented trio!
22nd November 2016 - I've uploaded a review of the tremendous new album 'Seconds out' by the Jigantics. They are proof that English bands can quite naturally master a variety of 'American Roots' styles!
19th November 2016 - I've uploaded a review of an album that will transport you back to the days of Vaudeville! In fact, it is by a trio called The Vaudevillian and is titled 'Bringing Satan Down.' The even better news is that when you've bought and loved your copy of the album, The Vaudevillian have a small but perfectly formed back catalogue just waiting for you!
15th November 2016 - A bit later than anticipated, but better late than never, I've uploaded a review of The Youngers incredible new album 'Picture of you.' They are one of the best alt. country/country rock bands of the 21st century and you owe it to yourself to get a copy of this and their 2 previous offerings. You won't be disappointed!
12th November 2016 - This year has seen the release of some incredible new albums but few that can match the almost otherworldly quality of 3hattrio's 'Solitaire.' Described as 'American desert music' the atmosphere it creates is akin to a trip through the arid desert wastes that you will eventually become lost in!
A review can be found on this months review page
8th November 2016 - I've uploaded a review of 'Someday the heart will trouble the mind,' the tremendous new recording by hugely talented Canadian 7 piece old time/bluegrass band The High Bar Gang.
5th November 2016 - The Lucky Strikes have been a great band for quite a few years now and their new album 'The motion and the moving on,' does nothing to change that statement. In fact, the album is so good it has actually enhanced my opinion of their qualities!
1st November 2016 - First review of the month is of a real cracker of an album. It is 'The last of the outlaws' by David Wadell, a man who is genuinely one of the last of the classic 'outlaw' country singer songwriters! It contains everything his old fans will love and plenty to attract new admirers, so treat yourself to a copy and lose yourself in the atmosphere created by some great songs.
29th October 2016 - Sometimes you can listen to a new album that you just know is going to be great only to find it is so good that it has elevated itself above most of the other great albums released in any particular year. Such an album is the tremendous 'A town called Patience' by alt. country supremos Waiting For Henry. It is only their second recording but actually improves upon their tremendous debut 'Ghosts and Compromise!'
25th October 2016 - Just back from an incredible long weekend of music so thought I had better come up with a review of an outstanding album and they don't come much better than Evening Bell's 'Dying Stars.' It is one of the most atmospheric and stylistically expansive albums of this or any other year.
19th October 2016 - Off to our final festival of the year tomorrow (Music Port, Whitby) so there won't be another review for nearly a week after this one. What an album it is though! It's 'On the ropes' by The Honeycutters, one of the most consistently excellent bands in 'roots music!'
16th October 2016 - A bit later than intended I've uploaded a review of the wonderful new album by Vicky Emerson. It's called 'Wake me when the wind dies down' and is a recording of great beauty with some well thought out and evocative songs, all beautifully performed.
14th October 2016 - I don't usually upload reviews on a Friday but the brilliant self titled e.p by Curse of Lono is released today and it is a fairly brief review, at least by my standards, so have a quick read then invest in a copy of the c.d!
11th October 2016 - A little later than anticipated, but better late than never, I've uploaded a review of the tremendous new album 'Till the daylight comes' by the hugely entertaining and talented Country Lips. Treat yourself to a copy; you won't regret it.
8th October 2016 - I can say with absolute certainty that there has been and will be a no more entertaining album release this year than Screamin' Miss Jackson & the Slap Ya Mama Big Bands 'I heard the voice of a donut.' There are some great songs, great playing and excellent vocals on a recording that epitomises high quality 'good time music!' A review of the album has been added to this months c.d reviews page.
4th October 2016 - I've uploaded a review of the tremendous new album by one of the hits of this years Maverick Festival. It's Dana Immanuel & the Stolen Bands 'Come with me,' an album that includes country, blues and just about everything in between, with some incredible playing and hugely evocative vocals!
1st October 2016 - As someone who writes reviews that are nearly always over long, I've uploaded a review that is very long, even for me! I will break the habit eventually but The Pine Street Ramblers incredible 'Hazy Shades of Gold' was not the place to start. If you like string band music and classic country rock you will love this album as much as I do. That's it! No more to say/write on the subject.
27th September 2016 - A review has been added of the California Feetwarmers superb new album 'Silver Seas.' More jazz than blues or country but it's all roots music and does incorporate a taste of various music forms.
24th September 2016 - This year of great album releases continues with a tremendous recording by Them Coulee Boys entitled 'Dancing in the dim light.' I've uploaded a review to the September reviews page.
20th September 2016 - I've uploaded a review of 'Magic Fire' the tremendous new album by the hugely talented, 'The Stray Birds,' a trio who continue to push their boundaries in an outward direction!
17th September 2016 - Blue Moon Marquee are just about the most talented and original Blues duo around, even including a little jazziness in their songs, with vocals that range from a beautiful, expressive femininity to a raw, yet melodic, 'Waitsian' growl. Read more about their new album, 'Gypsy Blues' on the September reviews page.
13th September 2016 - I've added a mid week review of the tremendous new album by Mark Harrison. It is titled 'Turpentine' and whilst he has always been known as a 'Bluesman' I've always thought there is much more to his music. This album proves my point!
10th September 2016 - An album first released in the U.S a couple of years ago but only just out in the U.K is the tremendous 'Tractor Beam' by Richie and Rosie. It may not be a new recording but it is an excellent modern interpretation of some old rural styles.
8th September 2016 - A mid week quickie review of the tremendously talented Glaswegian, Martha L. Healy's gorgeous new e.p 'To be free' has been added to the current months c.d reviews page.
6th September 2016 - I've uploaded a review of one of the best debut albums I've heard for a very long time. It is an absolute beauty of a recording by Oklahoma native Kalyn Fay and is titled 'Bible Belt'
3rd September 2016 - First c.d reviewed in September is a contender for many peoples albums of the year, mine included. It is titled 'Nine Pin' and is by the hugely talented young banjoist, singer and songwriter, Kaia Kater who splits her time between home in Canada and her studies in the Appalachians.
30th August 2016 - Final review of the month is of the beautiful new album 'Crazy Beautiful' by Tia McGraff. Excellent songs, great arrangements and beautiful vocals make the album essential listening for all 'country' fans!
27th August 2016 - Jacob Miller & the Bridge City Crooners new album is yet another example of the diversity of Canadian roots music. There is vigour, fire, great expertise and a powerful melodicism to every track on 'Pacific Ragtime,' but above all it 'swings!' A review can be found on the August c.d reviews page.
23rd August 2016 - 'Jesse Furay Lynch' on her self titled solo debut recording has proved beyond all reasonable doubt that talent can be passed down through the generations. Jesse is the daughter of Richie Furay, one of the midwives (midhusbands?) who helped deliver 'country rock' to the world at large through 'Buffalo Springfield' and 'Poco.' A review of her beautiful album can be found on the August c.d reviews page.
20th August 2016 - With their seventh album The Devil Makes Three may well have made the best 'covers' album ever! It is called 'Redemption and Ruin' and whilst stylistically diverse everything blends together beautifully.
15th August 2015 - I've added a review of the tremendous new album 'Cat's got the measles' by the Oldtime Stringband to this months c.d reviews page. Their first two recordings were excellent and this one is even better!
13th August 2016 - A review of the tremendous full length debut album by the Georgia Shackleton Trio has been added to this months c.d reviews page. It is called ' The dog who would not be washed' and whilst rooted in English folk music is stylistically much more expansive.
9th August 2016 - I've uploaded a review of the brilliant new album by Corpse Reviver. It is called 'Volume 2: Dry Bones' and as with Volume 1, reworks some of the songs from Harry Smiths 'Anthology of American Folk Music,' all done in a trio setting. I'm already looking forward to Volume 3!
6th August 2016 - There are some hugely talented British 'American Roots' bands around at the moment and one of the best is The Buffalo Skinners. I've added a review of their tremendous new album 'Cease your dreaming.'
4th August 2016 - I've uploaded a review of Hubert Murray's tremendous new e.p entitled 'Shorten the Road.' It gives a clue to to this Irish master musicians talents in mastering blues, folk, bluegrass, old timey and much more.
If he (or indeed Lands End) is playing anywhere near you make sure you see him/them!
1st August 2016 - First review of the new month is of the tremendous new album by Lilly Hiatt entitled 'Royal Blue.' I may have had one or two reservations about the sound, although they are diminishing, but absolutely none about the writing, playing and Lilly's gorgeous vocals.
29th July 2016 - It will probably be the last review of this month but we're closing it with a cracker! It is 'Fern girl & ice man' by The Lowest Pair. If the name rings a bell it could well be because I reviewed their 'Uncertain as it is uneven,' an album released on the same day as this one, about a month ago! I thought perhaps reviewing both was overkill but relented because of the sheer quality of both recordings.
26th July 2016 - A bit later than expected but I've finally uploaded a review of Ryan Gustafson's extraordinary new album, 'Montana.' It is his second recording as his 'Dead Tongues' alter ego and takes the blend of old timey and blues to a new level.
22nd July 2016 - A new album by Cahalen Morrison is always quite an event but this time it's not with Eli West! Instead he is part of the band 'Western Centuries,' a country band that includes three singer songwriters and a brilliant debut album 'Weight of the world.'
Reviewed on the July c.d reviews page.
19th July 2016 - The edgier side of country music has a fresh new talent and he is British! His name is Luke Whittemore and his new e.p. is required listening for all roots fans. It is called 'Northern Town' and a review can be found on the July c.d reviews page.
16th July 2016 - American Aquarium are a great band so it was always going to be interesting to see if lead singer songwriter BJ Barham could maintain the quality with his first solo album. He easily does that on 'Rockingham' a much more sparse and personal recording but one of great quality. It is reviewed on the July c.d reviews page.
12th July 2016 - Keegan McInroe has recently released his fourth album, Uncouth Pilgrims.' It contains excellent songs, but more than that it shows his versatility and command of most aspects of 'roots music.' A review has just been added to the July c.d reviews page.
9th July 2016 - If you love music that has a beautiful flowing melodicism and with great depth The Danberrys 'Give and Receive' is certainly the album for you. I wasn't sure at first but have gradually been smitten by the gorgeous sounds and depth of the songs.
5th July 2016 - I've uploaded a review/report/series of disjointed musings, whatever, of this years Maverick festival along with about 100 or so (I didn't count) photos on a rather unwieldy page. The 'report' was just a flow of consciousness thing that went on far too long but to be honest I just didn't feel like editing it so apologies for mistakes in grammar etc. I took about 300 photos so there are a lot more if anyone wants any.
5th July 2016 - First c.d review of July is of the unusual but hugely rewarding album 'Bless my soul,' by Jonathan Warren & the Billy Goats.' It took me a little time to get into, never a bad thing, but now I keep returning to it even though I can ill afford the time!
30th June 2016 - Off to the Maverick festival tomorrow so thought I would upload a review today as I will have no internet access in deepest Suffolk! I've added a review of an album that seems to have been resident in my home c.d player for quite some time now. It is by Mean Mary, is titled 'Sweet' and will certainly figure strongly in my albums of the year.
28th June 2016 - Yesterday was the day my love of football was finally killed off but I don't care all the time I can get albums such as Thomas Hine's new release 'Some motion or novelty.' Recordings of this quality are more a replacement for that love than a consolation. It is a tremendous album that you can read about on this months reviews page!
25th June 2016 - As far as American roots music goes I think this year will be defined by the extraordinary number of truly great albums that have been released and no doubt will continue to be released. To those can be added 'Uncertain as it is uneven' by The Lowest Pair, a hugely gifted duo who play 'old timey' music as it should be played.
21st June 2016 - A review of the excellent Farmington Hill's new album 'More rock than eagle block' has been added to this months c.d reviews page.
18th June 2016 - I've uploaded a review of one of the great emotional roller coaster albums of our time. There can have been few, if any, albums in the past that have opened up such depths of emotion as Michael McDermott's 'Willow Springs.' I felt it so strongly I've added a footnote to a review I finished a couple of weeks ago.
16th June 2016 - Brooks Williams has long been a great singer, songwriter and guitarist and the proof is on his new album titled 'My turn now.' His tap root is the blues but ultimately his 'roots' music is without restrictions as you will find in this new review.
13th June 2016 - Just finished this brief review of a tremendous 5 track e.p. titled 'LA14' by Rod Melancon. It is a taster of what awaits us when his new album is released a little later in the year. If this doesn't whet your appetite and ensure you get a copy of that new recording I will be very surprised!
11th June 2016 - 2016 is certainly turning into a bumper year for great albums. The latest addition is this tremendous recording of 'real country music' from Wink Burcham. It is called 'Cleveland Summer Nights' and contains some tremendous songs, excellent arrangements and Wink's warm expressive vocals. Not a lot more you could want really is there?
7th June 2016 - It's very rare that I review an e.p but Rodeo Gypsy's 'Southern Proof' is so good I just couldn't resist it!
4th June 2016 - First review of the month is of newcomer Andy Ferrell's tremendous début album 'At home and in Nashville' which does exactly what it says on the label! Half of the album was recorded in a Nashville studio and the other half in his home town, the two contrasting locations giving the listener the opportunity to hear a rare talent performing in two different settings.
31st May 2016 - Back from the west country in time to upload the final review of May and what a rare treat this album and band is. The album is called 'Put on your old grey bonnet' and is by The Corn Potato String Band, a trio virtually without peers when It comes to performing 'old timey' country music. For people in and around Sussex the trio are playing at the Sussex Ox on Monday 6th June.
I'll see you there?
26th May 2016 - Tomorrow sees the release of an album that will be a contender for 'Album of the year' so consequently is one that you really should treat yourself to! It is 'Let me off at the bottom' by Daniel Meade and the Flying Mules, a singer songwriter and band that were one of the great highlights of this years Kilkenny festival and will no doubt also be a highlight of July's Maverick festival. A review can be found on the May C.D reviews page.
24th May 2016 - I've uploaded a review of the debut solo album 'The Both' by talented singer and multi instrumentalist Eli West. It is an unusual but hugely rewarding album that includes Eli's warm vocals and virtuoso playing from both him and the strong supporting cast.
21st May 2016 - Multi talented singer songwriter and much in demand producer Steve Dawson has released what may very well be the best album of his career in 'Solid States and Loose Ends.' A review has been added to the May c.d reviews page.
17th May 2016 - I've finally managed to get a review of 'You're Still Here,' the superb new e.p by one of my all time favourite bands, June Star, on the website. As an added bonus I've added a video of a live gig they played at the end of 2014. Ten albums into a career that started with a great album and still improving on a sound that I didn't think could be improved upon. Not many you can say that about!
14th May 2016 - I and many other music fans have been following the career of Carrie Rodriguez since first seeing her with Chip Taylor. Over the years she has blossomed into a hugely talented singer songwriter who is totally unafraid of stretching generic boundaries. The evidence can be found on 'Lola,' her tremendous new album that is reviewed on the May c.d reviews page.
10th May 2016 - An album i've been listening to for some time now is Tom Blackwell's 'Tyrone the Gun.' If you like an artist who plays and sings country music in a beautifully soulful way and with a distinct 'edginess' you need look no further. This is the album for you, particularly when you add the fact that he is also a talented songwriter!
7th May 2016 - First review of May is of another another cracking album, 'Charismo' by the Hackensaw Boys, their first recording for quite a few years. They will be on tour in the U.K. and the rest of Europe from late June as well as playing at the Maverick festival. Gives me the chance to see them a couple of times!
28th April 2016 - Third day in a row i've uploaded a c.d review and this one is another contender for album of the year, perhaps even decade! Make the best of it because there will be no more reviews for about 10 days. The album is 'Wilder Side' and it's a real stunner from Tulsa native Carter Sampson. Still can't believe she will be playing live at Brighton's own Prince Albert on 29th June!
27th April 2016 - Just to show that I can be prolific I've uploaded a second review in the last 2 days and this one promises to be in mine and probably many other peoples Albums of the year list. It is The Westies incredibly dark but rewarding new album 'Six on the out.' Is there a better singer songwriter than Michael McDermott? The question is rhetorical. There isn't. (another review to follow tomorrow because i'm off to Kilkenny Friday! Oh, have I mentioned that before? O.k.)
26th April 2016 - I've finally uploaded a review of 'River of Mercy' by British 'troubadour' Hogie. It's been around for a while but is an album that will more than repay repeated listening sessions with it's warm expressive vocals, great songs and arrangements and strong melodies.
22nd April 2016 - I've uploaded a review of 'Careless Soul,' the tremendous new album by one of the new young stars of 'real country music!'
19th April 2016 - The Glade City Rounders are one of the finest 'old timey/hillbilly' bands around so it will be no surprise for you to read that their new album 'Don't Get Weary' is as good as anything you will hear this year.
A review has been added to the April reviews page.
16th April 2016 - Ex Stairwell Sister, Evie Ladin, and her band, have released a tremendous new album in 'Jump the Fire,' a recording that provides a beautiful 21st century update of the 'old timey' genre that is unique in this day and age.
12th April 2016 - That 'difficult second album' doesn't really apply to Norrie McCulloch's excellent new recording 'These Mountain Blues.' It is proof, should it be needed, that us Brits are more than capable of producing some authenric roots music.
9th April 2016 - It is now quite a few months since the release of The Orphan Brigade's incredible recording, 'Soundtrack to a Ghost Story,' was released, during which time I have played it countless times. It is true to say it is musically, lyrically and conceptually one of the most moving albums of the 21st century so far. To say it is epic in scope is an understatement but read the review and then don't take my word for it, buy the album and if you don't agree tell me I'm wrong!
5th April 2016 - A reveiew of 'North Wind' by talented roots band Gunther Brown has been added to the April c.d reviews page. They can 'rock' and do 'mellow country ballads' and just about everything in between so whatever your musical tastes you will find plenty on this tremendous album to suit them!
2nd April 2016 - Rod Picott's 'Fortune' is another album i've been listening to for some considerable time now, not because I struggled to get into it, but because I love the variety in his music. Eventually had to stop just listening for pleasure and start writing about why I have enjoyed it so much, so I've finally uploaded a review!
29th March 2016 - Last review of the month is of an album that I've been listening to on and off for several months now. It's the tremendous, if highly unusual, new recording by Cam Penner entitled 'Sex & Politics.' Just Cam and Jon Wood together in a woodshed with their instruments have produced an exceptionally absorbing bunch of songs and sounds.
26th March 2016 - I've uploaded a review of 'I was so fond of you' the tremendous new album by hugely talented 'edgy' Canadian country singer Matt Patershuk. It's a collection of great songs, excellent arrangements and evocative vocals that is just begging to be added to your collection!
23rd March 2016 - If you love music that is unquestionably unique in this 21st century you need a copy of Sheesham and Lotus and Sons new album '78rpm!' I'vejust added a review of this tremendous album to the March c.d reviews page
19th March 2016 - I've uploaded a review of The Paul Benjaman Band's 'Sneaker,' a tremendous recording that helps update the 'Tulsa sound!'
15th March 2016 - A new review has been added of the mainly instrumental 'old timey' self titled album by Mercury Dimes mainstays, the hugely talented duo 'Skillet Licorice'
11th March 2016 - I've uploaded a review of the most otherworldly and spooky album of the year so far! It's by the 3hattrio and is titled 'Dark Desrt Night' a recording that is absolutely loaded with quite sublime 'desert music.'
8th March 2016 - A review has been added of Nathan Bell's incredible new album 'I don't do this for love, I do this for love.' It's quite alarming (at least for those of us with no musical talent!) that one man can release so many great albums in a row, but that's what Nathan has achieved and long may he continue to do so!
5th March 2016 - I've uploaded a review of the tremendous debut solo album by Alex Culbreth. It is called 'High Country' and includes songs that perfectly blend elements of country, folk and blues.
1st March 2016 - First day of a new month sees a new review of the re-recording of a 10 year old album. It's the excellent Danny Barnes with a reworking of his now out of print but still popular 2005 album 'Get myself together,' now titled 'Got myself together (Ten years later)'
27th February 2016 - Last review of the month is of a recording that will be an album of the year contender. It's called 'Another Black Hole' and is another in a long line of peerless recordings by Malcolm Holcomb. The genre? Blues, country, folk; you name it, it's in there!
21st February 2016 - I've uploaded a review of just about the most diverse roots band you will ever have the pleasure of hearing! They are called The Boxcar Boys and the album is 'Cicada Ball' a recording that blends everything you can think of from blues to klezmer and jazz to country into a delicious stew!
20th February 2016 - If you love roots music that contains great beauty and purity you really need a copy of 'Dori Freeman,' the young lady's début album in what promises to be a long and fruitful career! A review has been uploaded to the February 2016 c.d reviews page.
16th February 2016 - I've uploaded a review of 'Blues for Country,' the tremendous new album by the Nouveaux Honkies, a talented pair of musicians who genuinely live an itinerant lifestyle.
13th February 2016 - I've uploaded a review of 'Between the Moon and the Mid West' by Austin Lucas, an album that is so good i'm still playing it over and over again. This is a front runner in the 'Album of the year' stakes but it's difficult to imagine a recording that will surpass this great album!
10th February 2016 - I've uploaded a review of the brilliant new album by The Curst Sons. It is called 'The Dancing Flea' and contains some of the finest 'hillbilly blues' known to man! By absolutely no coincidence whatsoever they are playing an album release gig at Brightons Green Door Store tomorrow night (11th Feb) A great night is pretty much guaranteed!
6th February 2016 - I've uploaded a review of 'Frankie & the no go road' by the wonderful Rita Hosking. Read the review then buy a copy of the album to see why it was one of my albums of the year 2015.
3rd February 2016 - First c.d review of this month is of an album I reviewed about a year ago. It's Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons tremendous recording, 'Take Yo' Time.' A little minor updating has been done but it's been resurrected because the album was released here in the U.K on 1st February this year and is so good it is more than worthy of your time and a little of your hard earned cash!
30th January 2016 - Final c.d review of the month is of 'Tripping on wires' by Mashville, another tremendously talented British 'American Roots' band!
27th January 2016 - I've uploaded a review of The Delta Jacks tremendous new album 'Trouble Ahead' to the January c.d reviews page. Proof that authentic American Roots music is thriving in the U.K!
23rd January 2016 - A review of Peewee Moore's incredible new album 'American Outlaw' has been added to the c.d reviews page. If real outlaw country is your thing this album defines it, if it's not your thing give it a listen and it soon will be!
19th January 2016 - I've added a review of the tremendous debut album by Britain's own The Holcombe Family String Band. It is called 'Ragtime! Hokum! Western Swing!' a title that perfectly sums up this hugely rewarding and entertaining album!
16th January 2016 - At long last I've uploaded a review of 'Me Oh My' the gorgeous new album by The Honeycutters. It was released early last year but when an album is this good it's definitely a case of better late than never!
13th January 2016 - I've uploaded a review of 'Blood Red Yonder,' the tremendous new album by talented Canadian roots singer songwriter Ben Rogers. Buy a copy and enhance the quality of your music collection!
9th January 2016 - I've uploaded a review of the tremendous new album by 'The Rutland Troubadour,' Paul McClure, one of the finest singer songwriters around. The album is called 'Songs for Anyone' and if ever an album was more appropriately titled i've yet to hear it!
5th January 2016 - On this website a review of a 'live' album is a real rarity but when they are of the quality of 'Live at the Rock Room' by Greg Trooper an exception has to be made!
1st January 2016 - First c.d review of the New Year is by hugely talented British 'American Roots' singer songwriter Richie Syrett. It is called 'From the feet up' and is Richie's third tremendous album of 'alt. country' and much more. Make this the start of a Happy New Year for you and Richie by purchasing a copy. I promise you won't be sorry!
